Books Beyond Borders is proud to sponsor one of the best live performance events in Austin. Oh and we almost forgot – FREE BEER.

We want to urge you and your viewers/listeners/readers to experience the stunning tap dance and live music phenomenon that is Tapestry on the Fringe.

Their next show is at Salvage Vanguard Theater, 2803 Manor Road, on Thursday, January 20th. Tapestry on the Fringe puts on its dazzling display every third Thursday, and it's a delight to see and hear. Shows start at 8 pm and 9:45 pm.

Tapestry Dance Company principal dancer and artistic director of fringe Matt Shields has assembled a talented cast including Tameca Jones on vocals, Phil Adair on keys, Charles Medearis on saxophone, and percussionist Andrew Brought, on, well, percussion, in addition to Jeffrey Olsen on drums, and Ebony Stewart performing spoken word.

Shields calls the performance “a musical high.” He mixes his own music, combining works from John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Dave Brubeck with hip hop and other musical genres to create a brand new sound. Then of course, there's the tap dancing.

“There are so many beautiful surprises in the rhythms,” says fan Andrea Williams. “It's like little musical orgasms.”

Williams says Shields often wears two different types of tap shoe and performs on four to five different wood surfaces, while the percussion, vocals, and music swirl onstage. “He's also the band leader while he's performing. With Matt, you just glide from one pocket to another effortlessly. He's like a hip, modern-day Fred Astaire.”

Fellow audience member Olivia Chacon echoes Williams’ enthusiasm.

“I like the whole vibe of the show,” Chacon says, “The quality of all the performers is just top notch. They really just sort of jam a little bit.”

The show has been called groovy, urban, and modern, and it's a little piece of magic that is refreshing in its audacity and revolutionary in its embrace of multiple genres and combinations of art forms.

The free fare includes the locally brewed Live Oak Big Bark and various selections of wine, and the ambience at Salvage Vanguard Theater on Manor Road is something you need to experience. So take a chance this Thursday, and go see Tapestry on the Fringe. You'll be talking about it for weeks afterward.

Books Beyond Borders loves this show, and we want your readers and viewers to experience it as well.
