"WINDOWS"
Who knew God & The Devil are Friends!?
"Windows" premiere was this past week. If you missed it, you definitely missed one of the greatest original plays by the award winning director and playwright Zell Miller III in collaboration with UpRise! Productions. I was presented with the part of "God" by Zell, quote, "I have a part that was written for you" about a week or two into being on the Austin Neo Soul Slam team. I was allowed to think about it and weigh my options of whether I wanted to do it or not. I like to be challenged and I knew that doing both the slam team & the play would be challenging for me...which is right up my alley.
I didn't talk to my team about it, in fact for almost half the summer they had no clue. Why? 1. I didn't want them to think I couldn't do both. 2. I didn't want some debate about how I choose to divide up my time. 3. I love working with Zell and to be honest, any production he asks me to be in, I will more than likely say YES. 4. I love a challenge and this was a way to for me to grow and prove to myself that I have reason for my swag! Lol.
You have no idea how hard it is to memorize group pieces, monologues, movement for BOTH, remember what practice you have to go to on which day, AND keep it together at home! I am incredibly blessed to be able to do what many may have thought "impossible." I am blessed to have worked with Zell & UpRise! Productions again (thank you); blessed to have met and created a friendship & supporting community with those of the cast (thank you); I am blessed to have had the support of my team & coach (once I told them), Neo Soul, The Cipher, family & friends, and so many local poets (thank you); blessed to have received so many compliments (even if a few made me blush, thank you ); blessed to have Baybid in my corner (thank you); blessed to have had my mother in the audience (3 nights in a row!) and to have a character I can dedicate to her (thank you); blessed to be me...proud of me...confident in me...humble in me....do me!
Special thanks to the cast:
Vincent as Adam
Robin as Eve
Stephanie & Queen Deelah as The Lilliths
Aaron as The Cop
J.P as The Transgender
Quincy aka Prophet of the Public Offenders as The Drug Dealer
Tiffany as The Drug Addict
Telvi as The Cancer Patient
Buddy the guitar player
John, Brian aka Tree, and Emily as the angels
and none other than Jeff "DaShade Moonbeam" Johnson as B (the devil)

So as I started, if you missed the show you definitely missed one of the greatest original plays...! But hold on...DON'T JUMP! There is a possibility the play will be done again in October...so stay tuned.
Hearts curved...

For my big brother Kyron "ky-ky"

He
holds
his
arms
out,
hands embracing
bending at the bow.
Cushion,
protecting the fall of his queens, princess, the ravyn can be seen twinkled in the eye.
Round almond shaped.
Strange how they are remembered to be the first male almonds I ever fell in love with.
My brother,
is known as nothing less and the math considers my mom a child in age.
Explained,
no.
It is what it isn't.
It was inevitable...he calls her moma, and he should.
We swear by their bond.
Ask me how I became so lucky...
God is always, always at the beginning of unexplained blessings.
So I wrap the hymn of his words in the heart,
like
the time
those
mornings
he woke us
chased us with plastic Fisher Price grocery carts.
Silly almond shaped eyes match his smile.
I've known no dull moments in his laugh.
"We represent the Lolly-Pop gang,
the Lolly-Pop gang."
I'll drink to that!
"You are my sun shine my only sun shine,
you make me happy when sky's are gray"
REMIX!
Fresh Prince version.
This is my tribute:
Thank you for the arms you hold out,
hands that embrace and bend at the bow.
Love your,
B.G.
to be continued....
